I am not a teacher. But through the course of my work as a Youth Project Manager, I do play the role of an 'informal educator'.

I am a firm believer that there is a major shortage of positive role models for our young people to look upto and emulate. It is a natural human need that we look to those around us and imitate/emulate their behaviour. We do this from the time we are babies without even realising. The problem today is that we not only have a lack of positive role models who exemplify the right values and ideals, but instead we have plenty of negative role models who live and promote the wrong messages eg. violence, drugs, greed, selfishness, anarchy etc

I am a teacher.

Schools can't provide role models. Life does.

In particular, schools can't pick out figures who embody certain virtues unrelated to the life of the students and suggest students admire them. Respect for others begins at home, not by being presented with distant figures to respect.
